Mom’s boyfriend admits beating 4-year-old to death

TIPTON – A central Indiana man has pleaded guilty to fatally beating a 4-year-old boy in his care after the child soiled himself.

James Rice pleaded guilty to a charge of battery causing death during a Tipton County court hearing Thursday for the November 2010 death of 4-year-old Dylan Cast.

Rice was the boyfriend of Dylan’s mother and was watching the boy and his 5-year-old brother at the family’s home in the community of Hobbs while their mother was at work.

Defense attorney Zaki Ali told the Kokomo Tribune (http://bit.ly/NZ85R2) that it was Rice’s decision to plead guilty and that he will present evidence at the Aug. 1 sentencing hearing of Rice’s remorse.

An autopsy found that Dylan’s spine was fractured and his aorta was lacerated.
