SOUTH BEND – He came down the steps with his arm swaddled in ice bags, and there was your metaphor for this day, hot and thick with disappointment as it was.
Matt Kaplanis’ arm on ice. The Blackhawk Christian Braves’ season, iced as well.
“It’s just a disappointment it’s got to end right now,” Kaplanis said, after Lafayette Central Catholic sent the Braves home from the Class A baseball semistate Saturday afternoon on the short end of a 4-1 score. “All around, we didn’t play our best game.”
Blackhawk coach Kevin Kinnison was somewhat more blunt.
“Gave it away,” said Kinnison, whose team suffered a big blow when second-baseman Aaron Jones separated his shoulder diving back to first base in the second inning and couldn’t continue. “Flat out gave them that game. I don’t what else to say.”
