Carroll relay team wins state title

BLOOMINGTON– The Carroll 3,200-meter relay team captured a championship Saturday at the boys state track meet atIndianaUniversity.

The relay team was made up of junior Eric Claxton, junior Alex Hess, senior John Hester and junior Jonathan Harper.

“We have all those people preaching and telling us what we can do, and it finally has shown with the blue ribbon hanging around our necks,” Hester said. “We felt good today. There was no need to back down. This is the last meet, and we wanted to make sure we gave it all we could and nothing was left in the tank. Each leg was getting better and better, and we were going strong. Nobody wanted to let their teammates down.”

The Chargers won in a time of 7:41.29, winning by almost three seconds. Avonwas second in 7:44.00.

“I am basically speechless,” Claxton said. “I wasn’t expecting that. I got a lead for us, and I saw we had a chance. It was insane.

“They know that if I get up there, they can move up and up. We just feed off each other.”

Carroll came into the state meet as the No. 9 seed after a disappointing time of 7:58.38 at the Wayne Regional last week.

“Coach said we won’t do that most of the time and you didn’t have your best performances at the regional,” Hess said. “We wanted to show that we could do it.”

Snider finished fifth in the event at 7:50.44.
