We're Digging It

  • Make your yard hummingbird-friendly
Early this week I finally spotted hummingbird activity in my yard. Once at the feeder and another time at a planter with fuchsia flowers. Hummingbirds usually show up around the first of May in my yard, but this year they seem to be two weeks late.
  • Being as green as your lawn
I needed a new lawn mower this year and ended up with a cordless electric self-propelled mower. I decided buy an electric mower after hearing Master Gardener Laurie Proctor talk about how much pollution one mower produces.
  • Butterfly effect
Michelle Davies captured this image of a Blue Clipper butterfly Tuesday at the Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne.

Mysterious plants came up in a clump all on their own. I have transplanted them in their own pots.

Mystery plants

Several similar healthy plants have sprouted all on their own in one of my outside flower pots. Before a seedling grows its first set of true leaves, its hard to say what type of plant it is.

One of my friends declared that they were melons. They sort of look like the cucumbers I have started from seed inside my house.

I am not really sure what they really are but one of the plants still has a seed attached to its leaf. It looks like is might be a sunflower seed. In fact it looks a lot like the seeds I have been feeding to the birds this winter. How they ended up in a flower pot is a mystery.

I have transplanted them into individual pots and am giving them a chance to grow into plants that I will then plant in the yard. If they are sunflowers, then I am hoping to produce a lot of seeds to feed the birds next winter.
