Coach Al Sims and captain Colin Chaulk retired, and now so has the goaltender who backstopped them to four championships between 2008 and 2012.We're scoreless late in the first period between the Komets and the Muskegon Lumberjacks, in a rematch of last season's Turner Cup Finals.
I have seen a lot of things, but rarely anything like this. There was a melee with Brad MacMillan and Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock fighting behind the Muskegon net.
I was just about to praise that because it fired up the Komets, who had looked out of sorts.
But after the puck was dropped, the Lumberjacks went after the Komets's stars. Robin Big Snake started wailing away on Colin Chaulk and Jason Lawmaster did the same to Konstantin Shafranov.
That's where it got interesting. MacMillan left the box to fight Lawmaster, knocking over a linesman along the way. That should be good for a 15-game suspension. Yes, Brad Jones, the IHL's disciplinarian, is at the game, pouring through a rule book as I type.
Big Snake left the box, too, to taunt MacMillan.
Out of control.
And referee Ryan Wood awarded only three game misconducts. I would guess Big Snake gets suspended, too, for his antics.
What brought this on? I think it's because MacMillan, as usual, was celebrating after his fight. Muskegon goalie Sebastien Centomo took exception to that. Or, it was because Schrock fought a skill player, John DiPace.
The other thing of note: Nick Boucher remains an awesome goaltender for Fort Wayne. He has been hung out to dry by his defense several times, and he's come up big.
