Typography is a newspaper's most powerful communicative tool. At once, it is a medium for the writer and the designer. Type conveys information, establishes a visual identity and serves as an entry point for readers. This redesign uses a clean, elegant and modern type palette to make efficient use of space.
Here's a look at the new palette:
Chronicle Condensed
Chronicle is the main headline typeface. It's bolder, easier to read and more modern than its predecessor, Goudy. Chronicle condensed was created for newspapers with narrower widths, so it is space efficient as well.
Frutiger
Clean and easy to read, Frutiger is used for quick reads like captions, glance boxes and information graphics.
Rockwell
Rockwell is used sparingly as a labeling device.
Times
We've kept Times as our body text and left it the same size as before the redesign. We added space between the lines to make it even easier to read.
